Has Anyone Been?
I was in Malta in December for about 10 days. I arrived by cargo ship but left on an Alitalia flight to Rome. There are ferries, I understand, from Sicily but we weren't able to confirm if any ran in winter by the time we needed to make a decision. So the best way to get there will depend on where you'll be coming from.
What I liked most of all in Malta was the architecture. Quite beautiful everywhere you go, southern European with a heavy overlay of North African. The language is of semitic derivation so it makes sense. New construction is hardly different from the old so there's a homogeneity about the towns that's very pleasing. Valletta is a beautiful city, both because of the buildings and because of the hills. Every time you arrive at the top of one there's a dramatic view down narrow streets often to the harbor. You can take city buses to the other side of the harbor and look back at the city, very beautiful.
The island is surprisingly small and there are buses that go all over. So seeing the island can be cheap and easy. I stayed in 3 places, the fishing village Marsaxlokk when I arrived, then in Mdina/Rabat and finally in Valletta. I liked them all. Costs were considerably less than anywhere else I've been in Europe.
