Moorea, Bora Bora or Both?

by Veronica »

My daughter is trying to decide for her honeymoon. Also, she's hoping to stay in one of those over the water bungalows. Any body stayed in a great one of those? Please let me know.

I went to both Moorea and Bora Bora for my honeymoon, and I vastly preferred Bora Bora for its peacefulness, its beauty, and its comparative lack of mosquitoes. We were lucky enough to stay in an overwater bungalow on small private mini-island (a "motu") just a boat ride away from the mainland. We were at the Sofitel Motu, and it was just fabulous.

Bora Bora is the place for those over-the-water bungalows, and if she's willing to pay the price--they're expensive--this will be a once-in-a-lifetime, memorable experience.  But Moorea is more middle-class, with affordable resort hotels.  The question is one of cost--a tremendous  costly splurge, versus a fine tropical experience.  Arthur Frommer

I would do both if they can possibly afford it - each island has a particular feel.  For overwater, Bora Bora will give you the most spectacular experience.  We stayed in an overwater bungalow at Pearl Beach and it was unforgetable.  On Moorea we saved a bit of money by staying in a garden unit.  Or you can compromise on price by choosing a 'lagoon' bungalow that has its front feet in the water, usually with a deck stretching out over the water, and the back legs on land.  When I think back on Tahiti it's definitely the stay on Bora Bora that stays in my daydreams!

Both! We did both and really enjoyed both, but for different reasons. Bora Bora was more beautiful, but somehow, we enjoyed the people and tootling around the island, a bit more in Moorea (which is also quite pretty).

I went to both Bora Bora and Moorea. Stayed at overwater bungalows in both locations and both were wonderful. Could not choose one over the over.
