Mall of America

by JenTay »

How much time should one devote to the Mall of America during a visit to Minneapolis? I'm not a big shopper but friends have told me it's something to be seen.

If you're not a big shopper and all you want to see is the overall layout of the Mall, then a few hours should do -- max a half day.

You'll likely be drawn in to some of the shops, many of which are quite interesting.  And there's a number of good eateries, so realistically you'll likely find yourself spending most of the day there.  If you have kids, they have a large amusement park with lots of rides, so that can also take several hours minimum.

I agree a few hours is good for the non shopper. It's a very well run Mall though. and worth seeing.

The MOA is very close to the airport; approximately 15-20 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. Have been out there twice and yes, it is huge. However IMHO once you get past the size of the place there really aren't that many unique stores (ones you find just at the MOA). It is as if every retail chain in America has a storefront there meaning you've seen these places before. Maybe not all in one place, but you've seen them before.

I was surprised by how compelling I found the Mall of America when I visited because, like you, I'm not a big shopper. But it's quite interesting, as is most of Minneapolis (great museums, the Guthrie Theater, a terrific food scene). Enjoy!
