Our favorite towns are Santa Fe and Taos--in the northern part of the State.

I haven't been to the Garden of the Gods near Colorado Springs in many years, but it used to be a very nice drive-through experience.

Continuing south from Bill Yost's recommendation, there's the Royal Gorge and Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado, and at the Four Corners, where Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah meet, is Mesa Verde National Park, with ancient Indian cliff dwellings.

There's much more, of course...but you'll want to save SOME of the time for New Mexico, right?

Thanks for your advices. I have been already in mesa Verde few years ago. From denver I will drive to pagosa spring as we stayed there as well and we liked soaking in the hot water. From there next stop will be taos. I have been in several places in states including yellowstone, yosemite and grand canyon so I was not sure to visit new mexico as I thought ithat was not worthy. what do you think about new mexico?

If you love great food, Santa Fe and Taos for sure! One of our favorite places to eat in Santa Fe is the Blue Corn Cafe which has great outdoor seating. if you love history and/or architecture, then you'll love the churches in Santa Fe and Taos.

I'm not a big fan of underground caves, but Carlsbad Caverns are pretty spectacular, especially on a hot day, the tems in the cavern are pretty cool.

We are four adults taking a guided tour with gate one travel and staying over for 2 nights in each Taos and Santa Fe. We have a lot of free time to explore on our own so wondering if you had any suggestions as to where we could walk to for the time we will be there on our own.  We are staying in a centrally located area within walking distance to downtown....
