We're a family of 4 -- 2 kids are ages 10 and 12 -- and want to travel to Kruger on safari. How safe is it with children and what do we pack?

We did not need visas traveling from the US a year ago.  But always check with each foreign country you visit to see what their entry requirements are.

Hi macdougal1

I live in South Africa, and would highly recommend a safari in the Kruger.  There are some magnificent private game lodges/concessions within the park, that cater for families and are safe and secure.

South Africa does have a high crime rate - especially in the cities, but in my opinion, no bigger risk than any other city in the world. Take the precautions you would normally take in any big city.  You wont need to stay in any city anyways, as one would usually transfer directly from the international airport to the regional airport closer to the Park, where your lodge will arrange for a road transfer.

The resorts and game lodges are all well equipped and other than your personal items and clothes suited for safari, most of what you will need will be available here.

Hope you come, as the Kruger really is special.....

Hi  I am making miy first triip to Africa (other than Egypt) and want to spend time in Capetown.  While there I hope to visit sites related to Nelson Mendela.  Are there private companies that would take a friend and me on a personal tour?  Are other ways helpful as well?  I will see the "usual" Capetown with my tour group (OAT) but we have some free time here.

Other ideas as well?  I want to make the most of this time.  Thank you.

Hi,

Kruger is the glagship game park for a good reason. In addition to the private reserves/lodges which are adjacent to Kruger, you can easily stay inside the Kruger camps and enjoy a wonderful self-guided safari. You can add guided drives with Kruger's guides from any of the camps or most gates.

Self-guided drives are easy, affordable and fun. As a family, you will have complete flexibility on your schedule and the wonderful network of Kruger roads, along with the detailed map they sell, will provide unlimited chances to spot game.

It is very safe to be in Kruger and we do it almost every other year as a family. We stay inside Kruger and also in the town of Hazyview which is 10 minutes from Kruger's Phabeni Gate.

Since you will in a vehicle, no need to go buy special safari clothes. Casual neutrals work just fine and layers are recommended for the winter months.

Let me know if I can provide any other assistance.

Cheers,

Heeten
